Day of Caring - Another Huge Success!
This year's Tiffin-Seneca United Way Day of Caring was held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 and was headquartered at the Seneca County Opportunity Center, 780 E. CR 20.
The weather was great and a lot was accomplished.
There were 281 volunteers working on 15 projects across our community.
The Pantry Project brought in a lot of non-perishable food and support items to help keep our pantries open to serve the needy.
Have you ever wondered what the value of your volunteer time adds to? Well, a volunteer work hour is currently valued at $20.85.
So, 281 volunteers X 3 hours (the work time for the weekend projects) X $20.85 = $17,576.55!
If you didn't get a chance to help out this year then mark your calendar for next year. Our community can always use your help!

Archived: May 6, 2011 Japan: Earthquake and Tsunami Donation Information
A letter from the United Way Worldwide regarding the Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan:
Our United Way offers its deepest sympathy to the Japanese people and others around the world affected by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. In the wake of natural disaster, United Way engages in long term recovery efforts to ensure a bright future for affected communities.
Infrastructure and communications have been affected by the disaster, and United Way is currently assessing the situation with our Japanese partners. Updates and information will be passed on as we get them from the United Way Worldwide.
JAPAN'S DISASTER RESPONSE UPDATE:
UNITED WAY WORLDWIDE
The hearts and minds of the United Way movement around the world are with the people of Japan. With communications disrupted by the disaster, we have been successful in connecting with Central Community Chest of Japan – our United Way in Japan. They are safe, but they have not been able to contact all of the local Community Chests in disaster-stricken areas. Central Community Chest of Japan is convening local Community Chests to create one central fund and are collaborating closely with government, local businesses and other NGOs to coordinate response on the ground.
As soon as we have specific information about the central fund, we will immediately provide this information to the United Way network, and it will immediately go up on our national website for individuals to give directly to the Central Community Chest of Japan. We are not activating the United Way Worldwide disaster fund but will direct interested donors to the Central Community Chest of Japan fund. The Community Chest of Korea has already committed $500,000, and at this time, United Way of Taiwan has pledges of $300,000.
Other information about helping now:
We’ll keep you posted as more information is available, and we will provide the direct link to the Central Community Chest of Japan fund as soon as it is available.

Campfire USA Accepted As New Associate Agency

Chief Executive Director, Patricia J. DeMonte announced that at the Tiffin-Seneca United Way Board of Directors voted to accept the Campfire USA for Associate Agency membership. The Campfire USA Northwest Ohio Council has satisfactorily met the requirements for membership and will be included in the 2010-2011 Campaign year.
The mission of the Camp Fire USA is to “build caring, confident youth and future leaders.” The Board of Trustees and the staff are committed to providing high quality programs to youth and families consistent with the purpose of Camp Fire USA.
For the past three years, Camp Fire USA Northwest Ohio Council has offered programs through the Tiffin City Schools. Last year the programs reached over 200 children in the Tiffin City Schools, including Lincoln, Noble and Washington schools. Noble School 1st grade students took part in the program “I’m Safe and Sure.” The 3rd grade class at Noble School and the 3rd and 5th grade students at Lincoln School received training in the “I Can Do It” program, while the 4th grader class at Washington School went through the “I’m Peer Proof” classes. All classes are taught by qualified trainers with the support of the local school administration, principals and teachers.
The membership standards for United Way agencies must be certified annually in order for us to remain a member of the United Way system,” stated DeMonte. “It is important for us to maintain a high standard of accountability and this is part of the process to document that our operations and those of our member agencies are transparent and meet or exceed United Way membership criteria requirements.” The Board of Trustees of the Tiffin-Seneca United Way reviewed and approved the Membership Requirements Certification on August 19, 2010. The application process is initially for Associate Agency Member status, in which the Camp Fire USA will be allowed to receive designated donations through the United Way Campaign. Associate membership will allow individual donors to designate to the Camp Fire USA program to serve the youth in our community. “We hope to see this organization expand to serve more schools in the Seneca County area in the future,” DeMonte clarified.

Janotta & Herner: Present $500 Donation to Tiffin-Seneca United Way
Christmas in July program in its 6th Year

Photo L. to R.: Mr. Ken Schafer, President Janotta & Herner; Pat DeMonte, Executive Director Tiffin-Seneca United Way; Jack Wangler, Tiffin-Seneca United Way Board President
Mr. Ken Schafer, President of Janotta & Herner (J&H), presented a check for $500 to Tiffin-Seneca United Way during their Christmas In July Program. This is the sixth year for the generous program and provides funding for United Way offices in several counties in which Janotta & Herner does business.
For many years J&H gave Christmas gifts to their customers. When the management team determined the cost of purchasing gifts, such as hams and turkeys, they realized the cost was quite large. One of the managers suggested that they give the money instead of gifts to help the needy and the Christmas In July Program was born.
The company sends Christmas cards and letters to their customers explaining the program. Customers are thrilled to know that they are helping those in need.
The Christmas In July Program is just one way Janotta & Herner employees support the communities in which they construct buildings.
They are truly Community Builders!
